Imphal's Curfew Returns Amid Clashes in Manipur

IMPHAL, MANIPUR – In the wake of escalating tensions, curfew relaxations that were briefly in effect from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM in Manipur’s Imphal West and East districts have been abruptly withdrawn. The decision comes after clashes erupted between local residents and security personnel.

An official order pertaining to Imphal West District stated, “Due to urgent concerns about potential disturbances to law and order in the district, as well as to prevent any untoward incidents and safeguard lives and property, the previously relaxed curfew from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM on August 3, 2023 (Thursday) in Imphal West District has been reimposed.”

The directives did provide exceptions for those involved in vital services such as healthcare, power, PHED, fuel stations, schools, municipal operations, media, legal proceedings, and air travel.

The directive further outlined the immediate imposition of a total curfew in the district, thereby confining the public to their residences throughout all areas of Imphal West District.

A similar order was issued for Imphal East district, nullifying the curfew relaxation scheduled for August 3, 2023, with immediate effect.
